Outline of the Grade One Program
The following is a brief outline of our Grade One program.
Language Arts
The comprehension of the French language and the ability to use it orally becomes a priority in Grade One. This is accomplished by developing the the child’s vocabulary and use of sentence structures in every area of learning. (Our goal is that by approximately December we will encourage the sole use of French in our classroom.) Much of the initial vocabulary studied is developed by using rhymes, songs, and stories related to our work on various themes covered throughout the year. These themes will englobe subjects across the curriculum ( math, writing, sciences, etc.). We will also incorporate the new vocabulary into the “livrets” (“booklets”) which the children should be able to “read”. In order to get into the reading process, the children are exposed to the written word in a number of ways. I use a combined “phonetics/whole language” reading approach in the classroom, in which we use the children’s real-life experiences as well as their interests in getting them to read, relate, and eventually write. The aim in reading is that the children will be able to decode words as well as recognize them – therefore, there will also be a strong emphasis on phonetics.
Mathematics
The aim of our math program is to develop the children’s understanding of mathematical ideas and to develop their ability to think and reason mathematically. Please see overview for details.
Social Studies
Our program is centered around developing the children’s awareness of themselves as well as their place in society. Through class activities such as preparing posters and booklets, as well as through observation activities and class discussion, we will develop the following themes: Myself, My School, My Family, My Surroundings.
Science
Children at this age display a wonderful sense of curiosity and awe about the world around them. In our Science program we will encourage this wonder in our study of Seasons, Weather, Living Beings (animals, butterflies, etc), and the Plant Cycle. The children will also be initiated to the scientific process by studying energy, matter and The Earth.
Physical Education
Our program focuses on safety as we do gymnastics, games, sports and dance.
Health and Career Planning
The children will become aware of the structure and function of the body, as well as how we care for it (nutrition, dental health, etc.)
Art
The children will receive the mayor part of the Art Program from Mr. Hogeveen, who will be with the children during my Prep Period twice a week. In our class, the children are given the opportunity to express their creativity through various forms of art, ranging from plastic art to creative drama. The use of song is constantly incorporated into all of our learning activities.
